| We are a group of vocalists who came
together to perform sea shanties and maritime songs
four years ago. The events that brought this
about were almost entirely accidental, but we found
ourselves completely immersed in this sub-set of folk
music.
The songs we sing are a historical
reflection of an amazing period of our history; the
people that originally sailed on tall ships sang these tunes against the
roar of wind and waves.
It was these wooden vessels that made the entire
world go around, and brought our ancestors to
America's shores. These songs are the voice of
hard working and largely unrecognized men and boys,
often conscripted into service aboard ships that
were as like to kill or maim them as not.
In
this day and age, the men who originally crewed on
these vessels are gone, but throughout the world
their songs live on. We are just one of a
handful of musical artists in the United States that
are working to keep this cultural history alive.
Knowing that friends and contemporaries of ours are
doing their best to preserve the original styles of
the songs, it has been our effort to create lively
interpretations of these same pieces - something the
modern ear can more easily focus on and enjoy.
In this way, we act as a gateway for the genre, so
that we can do our part to keep the spirit of this
maritime heritage alive. |
